Jean-Louis Fabiani

is a sociologist based at the Central European University, Budapest. He is co-author with Emmanuel Ethis and Damien Malinas of Avignon ou le public participant: Une sociologie du spectateur réinventé, L’Entretemps, 2008 and the author of Après la culture légitime : Objets, publics, autorités, L’Harmattan, 2007.

In this article based on Fabiani’s speech at the Eurozine conference in 2013, the sociologist situates the events of Zucotti Park and Tahrir Square in a continuum that points to how future innovation may enable a global public sphere to overcome democratic fatigue.
