The Flight From... Or Solidarity With...?

Andrius Martinkus

The author discusses the reasons of Lithuania’s integration into EU and NATO. He tries to explain the deeper motivation behind the policy of joining Euro-Atlantic structures. By applying the dichotomy of openness-closeness, the author reviews certain recent expressions of public opinion. So far those who are for and against integration often manipulate with the existential isolation of their audiences. The fear of reality is peculiar to “open societies”, but it is one of the main obstacles to establish relations between society and individuals based on solidarity.
