Belarusian Association of Journalists

is a Belarusian non-governmental organisation aimed at ensuring freedom of speech and rights of receiving and distributing information and promoting professional standards of journalism.

It was founded in 1995. BAJ is an affiliate of the International Federation of Journalists, of the European Federation of Journalists and a partner of Reporters Without Borders.

BAJ has been constantly monitoring violations of freedom of expression and freedom of the media since 1998.

BAJ has been publishing a professional magazine Abajour since 2000.

The harsh clampdown on independent reporting in Belarus in the run-up and aftermath of the presidential elections in December 2010 dashed any hopes that might have existed about a “European rapprochement”. A report by the Belarusian Association of Journalists reveals just how far the regime has deviated from any accepted definition of a free press.
