Transitions

Founded in 1999, Transitions (Czech Republic) is a non-profit media development organization based in Prague that is a rare combination of a media outlet and journalism training academy. Our mission is to foster high-quality, independent journalism and an informed and engaged public. The heart of our operation is our non-profit newsmagazine, reporting the news and issues shaping Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), Southeastern Europe, and Eurasia. We serve as a platform for the region’s independent journalists to cover topics often underreported in their home countries.

In addition to the news site, we run training programs throughout the post-communist region, designed to improve the skills of journalists and journalism students, including in some of the more repressive countries of the region. We have more than 10,000 alumni by now, through our in-person and online workshops/courses. More recently our efforts have focused on spreading knowledge of solutions journalism throughout Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), through subgrants for reporters to try this type of reporting firsthand, with our support and mentoring. We recently formed a cohort of newsrooms in six countries that aim to increase this type of reporting. You can read about our efforts here.

We have a dedicated SoJo section in our online magazine (with many trainee-produced articles), and a SoJo resource center, which includes the first online, interactive solutions journalism course. Our efforts have been acknowledged regionally and globally (the Solutions Journalism Network published this story about us).

About 10 years ago, we also branched out into working with journalists to counter disinformation, and then launched what has turned into an extensive media literacy program, targeting exclusively senior citizens in the Visegrad countries of the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, and Hungary. The latter program has been supported by the National Endowment for Democracy and now Google, and includes, for example, numerous workshops for seniors to orient them in the overflow of information and then pointers on how to counter the spread of disinformation themselves.
