is a Rwandan writer living in Belgium. She was born in Byumba in 1959. A sociologist by training, she worked in the field of rural development before being forced to flee to Kivu in 1994. In 1996, when the refugee camps were destroyed, she had to flee once more. Her autobiography Fuir ou mourir au Zaire. Le vécu d’une réfugiée Rwandaise was published in French in 2000 and in English in 2004 (Surviving the slaughter: the ordeal of a Rwandan refugee in Zaire).
Both Hutus and Tutsis committed crimes against humanity in the conflict in Rwanda, says author Marie Béatrice Umutesi in conversation with Swedish journalist Felix Holmgren. The international community first betrayed the Tutsis, then the Hutus.
