Sibiu (in German, Hermannstadt) is located in Transylvania, not far from the Carpathian Mountains. It was founded in 1190 by German settlers and the German influence is still visible in the city. Sibiu's official website offers an overview of the city's history as well as practical information for visitors from abroad.

Conference venues

The Brukenthal Museum is Romania's oldest museum, with a highly interesting art collection. The conference programme includes a guided tour of the palace and the exhibition. The meeting will take place in the Brukenthal Contemporary Art Gallery, situated not far from the main Brukenthal building.

The conference's closing event will take place at the Astra Museum, Europe's largest open-air museum.

Visa

American and Canadian citizens as well as citizens of most European countries do not need an entry visa to visit Romania (for stays up to 90 days). However, a valid passport is required for all international visitors (even though citizens of the countries of the European Union in principle can enter Romania with their Identity Card).

Citizens of other countries, including Albania, Belarus, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Macedonia, Montenegro, Russia, Serbia, Turkey, and Ukraine should check the visa regulations that apply to them with the nearest Romanian diplomatic office.

Detailed information concerning visa regulations and a list of States whose citizens are required to to have a visa can be found on the website of the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Money

The Romanian currency is called Leu (Romainian New Leu, RON) and is the only currency accepted in shops and restaurants. You can exchange money at banks and privately owned bureaux de change, called "Casa de schimb valutar". ATMs are available throughout the city and Mastercard and Visa are accepted in large hotels and shops, but not in smaller towns and villages.

Check a currency converter for current exchange rates.

Weather

Sibiu's climate is temperate-continental. But you never know with the weather. Consult a detailed forecast... and get a second opinion.
