The 23rd European Meeting of Cultural Journals
Conference
The 23rd European Meeting of Cultural Journals will take place in Linz, Austria, from 13 to 16 May. This year's meeting is organized by Eurozine in cooperation with Lentos Kunstmuseum Linz. More than 100 editors and intellectuals from Europe's leading cultural journals will be participating. The programme includes seminars, speeches and debates as well as an exhibition open to the public, displaying journals from more than 30 countries.
Theme
Changing Media, Media in Change
Changing media
Under the heading "Changing media, media in change", the conference will focus on the media crisis in the wake of the digital revolution.
Media throughout the world are in a state of flux unprecedented since the invention of the printing press. While the newspaper crisis is the most striking manifestation of change, media as a whole is faced with new and profound challenges. Recent political, social, economic and technological developments transform not only the concept of publishing itself but have effects on copyright legislation and free speech as well as the fundamental functioning of the public sphere. All fields of publishing and culture are affected, from the literary book trade to the academic production of knowledge, from cultural journals to radio and television.
Documents Thematic outline and programme.
Focal point Eurozine's focal point "Changing media – Media in change" compiles articles on a field experiencing profound and constant transformation.
The 45 square foot publishing house
Conference publication
In the frame of the EUROZINE conference 2011 in Linz, the "MICRO PUBLISHING HOUSE" is an attempt to recreate the entire production chain of a publishing house – from background research and editorial work through image production all the way to print – within the space of 4 m².
Using an installative setting, which will become a workplace for three days for journalists, editors, graphic designers and printers, the "MICRO PUBLISHING HOUSE" offers its recipients an insight into the structure of a publishing house. That is the didactic core of the project.
The artistic approach to this thematic field is conducted through the production of a two-page printed work, the Eurozine Print Pad. The title page shows hand-printed illustrations (linocut, stamp and stencil printing), which cover the topic graphically; the contents page shows texts by journalists and editors associated with the Eurozine network. The idea is to visualize what is individual and what is serial, to illustrate the interplay and counterplay of mass production and manual craft.

Location
Linz, Austria
City in change
Linz, the city on the Danube. The city's slogan, "Linz.changes", is reflected in the cityscape which features historic facades juxtaposed with futuristically lit, architecturally acclaimed buildings. There are several new constructions which have enhanced the broad spectrum of urban architecture. The Ars Electronica Centre – the museum of the future – adorns the left bank of the Danube with its LED illuminated glass forms reminiscent of a ship. Linz Palace provides a breathtaking view of the whole city. And finally, Lentos Kunstmuseum Linz belongs to one of the most important modern museums in Austria and serves as our conference venue.
Conference venue
Modern art
The conference opening will take place at Lentos Kunstmuseum Linz which is also the conference venue.
The museum, which opened in 2003, is considered one of the most important museums of modern and contemporary art in Austria. With its focus on masterpieces of European painting from the first half of the 20th century and a rich collection of graphic art and high quality photography, Lentos draws an arch from the classical historical art of the early 20th century to today.
For your convenience we have put together a map of Linz with the venues marked in red: Map with venues.
