Ahmed Essop
(b.1931 in India) is a teacher and writer. He emigrated to South Africa as a child and was educated at the Johannesburg Indian High School in Fordsburg and at the University of South Africa (BA, 1964) and taught English at schools in Johannesburg. His first publication was The Dark Goddess (1959), which was followed in the 1960s by short stories and poetry published in South African periodicals. He has since published stories in Staffrider and in anthologies edited by Stephen Gray, Mothobi Mutloatse, and Robin Malan. His often moving and richly comic collection The Hajji and Other Stories (1978) received the Olive Schreiner Award; his first novel, The Visitation (1980), returns to the setting of the stories of The Hajji. The Emperor (1984) is another novel; Noorjehan and Other Stories (1990) and The King of Hearts and Other Stories (1997) collect further stories.
