Ich wäre gerne European

Ich wäre gerne Europäer.

Aber Europa ist keine Nation.

Eben.

Changing Europe

The European Union has been far more successful than anyone expected when the Treaty of Rome was signed half a century ago, on 25 March 1957. But as political Europe turns 50, the questions about its future are as open as ever. [ more ]

Leave us alone!
Stimmt.

Just switch to English. It would save me lots of troubles, migraines, and mix-ups.

So, it would be good for you, but what about Europe's cultural diversity?

Don't worry about it, it will look after itself. In America, we have a common language and we don't spend years trying to work out what other people are trying to say to each other.

I beg your pardon?

"Pardon" ist eigentlich French, wissen Sie das?

Ah, on parle français ici?

What did she say?! I can't understand a word here!

J'ai dit quelque chose de mal?

Keineswegs. Im Gegenteil. Machen Sie es sich sprachlich gemütlich. Was bringt Sie denn her?

Say it again.

But that would mean that most people would not understand what is being said, unless we introduce compulsory learning of foreign languages for children and adults alike and on an unprecedented scale.

Ne deriverebbe una macedonia linguistica. Europa diverrebbe Babele. Si demotiverebbe la popolazione.

Deriverebbe? Diverrebbe? Demotiverebbe? O que diz por favor?

Es wäre ein linguistisches Mazedonien. Europa würde Bagdad ...

Cultural diversity

While decades of migration have meant that multiculturalism has long been a de facto element of western European society, multiculturalism as social policy has been heavily challenged. Read articles on the debate here. [ more ]
Cómo?

What would happen to translators?

Mir isch doch glich!

Why are you all talking different languages? If Europe has to become a giant laboratory for rethinking humanity's future, then you plainly need to be able to understand each other.

But what if I don't want to?

Then just forget about the European Dream! Sustainable development, quality of life, a century of peace – who cares!

Moi, je care.

Yes, me too, but if the nurturing of community and speaking one's own dialect is on top of our priorities, then let's go on with it and stop dreaming about working together. After all, the Declaration of Bordeaux of 1978 proclaimed that "le droit de chaque Européen a sa région est un des éléments de son droit a la différence".

Ach was.

You mean: Poiew metarryum'iseiw e'inai apara'ithtew 'vste na antimetvpiste'i o pagkósmiow antagvnismów kai na dhmioyrghuoýn oi synu'hkew gia aeifóro anáptyzh?[1]

Yes, that's it.

Noed!

C'est trop long.

Mitä uudistuksia tarvitaan, jotta pystytään vastaamaan maailmanlaajuiseen kilpailuun ja luomaan edellytykset kestävälle kehitykselle?

Jakou Evropskou unii byste si pøáli?

D'accord.

Why d'accord?

Jak vnímáte Evropu a èinnosti Unie.

After all, why not?

Perché no? Perché si. Se non si capisce, non si capisce. Non stiamo qua a far troppe chiacchiere, dai, fanagot, annamo a lavora', come fanno a Sciaffusa.

Grüezi wohl, Frau Stirnima!

Are we in Germany?

Somewhere in Europe.

Ja, und reden wir lieber über Europa.

Let's get back to Europe, please, for those who didn't quite get it.

Parliam d'Europa, e' questo che intendete? Siamo qui per questo, d'altronde. Viva gli Stati Uniti d'Europa!

Allons!

Was hat denn das damit zu tun?

Well, you know, if you don't want to switch between languages, you can always change subject...

E gia! Lo sapevate che il famoso compositore Roland de Lassus, who came from Mons and spent years in Italy before settling in Munich at the Court of Duke Wilhelm of Bavaria, used to entertain his master by writing him letters in a mix of five languages: Latin, French, Italian, German, and Spanish, with passages such as: "Je me retrouve avec la gracieuse letterine qu'il placuit a' votre Excellence mihi scribere." Or, "ma femme, mon petit guillaume, se porte ziemlich wohl Gott sei lob?" L'ho letto sulla European Review.

Charles V's maxim: I speak Spanish to God, Italian to women, French to men, and German to my horse.

English, Flemish and Urdu. Arabo, Ceco, Danese e Italiano.

One issue is whether something can be said theoretically in any language, and a different issue is whether people are able to do that, which they are plainly not, in my humble opinion.

Donc l'Europa remains waarachtig ein Mythus?

Si us plau, utilitzeu només una llengua. Sentences like that are horrible. Dejstvitelxno.[2]

Oui, c'est vrai. Increased contact leads to borrowing, mixing and hybridization.

I have a European dream! European writers producing books not just in their language, but using more than one. Showing how people react to multilingualism. Making the reader experience this with a real change of language in the book, not just in the imagination.

Eine fundamentale Zutat, you mean.

Whatever. And think of the mistakes. Nobody will know whether they are deliberate or not quite meant.

When culture becomes more international, people enter unfamiliar grounds of knowledge production.

You can try anyway, guys. Whatever that actually means. Not much choice left. Sorry, I'd love to stay on, but I've got a plane home to catch. Best of luck!

http://www.eurozine.com/comp/focalpoints/eurocrisis.html
Brought on by the global economic recession, the eurocrisis has been exacerbated by serious faults built into the monetary union. In a new Eurozine focal point, contributors discuss whether the EU is not only broke, but also broken -- and if so, whether Europe's leaders are up to the task of fixing it. [more]

Europe talks to Europe

Nationalism in Belgium might be different from nationalism in Ukraine, but if we want to understand the current European crisis and how to overcome it we need to take both into account. The debate series "Europe talks to Europe" is an attempt to turn European intellectual debate into a two-way street. [more]

Arrivals/Departures: European harbour cities as places of migration
The 24th European Meeting of Cultural Journals
Hamburg, 14-16 September 2012

http://www.eurozine.com/comp/hamburg2012.html
Harbour cities as places of movement, of immigration and emigration, as places of inclusion and exclusion, develop distinct modes of being that not only reflect different cultural traditions and political and social self-conceptions, but also communicate how they see themselves as part of the structure that is "Europe". The 2012 Eurozine conference will explore how European societies deal variously with the cultural legacy of the "harbour city". [more]
