Literatur im Herbst 2011: Via Donau
28-30 October 2011, Odeon Theatre Vienna
"Blue Danube, red Danube, grey Danube, white Danube... The names for Europe's longest river with a length of 2900 kilometres are almost as various as the number of the countries through which it runs," writes Erich Klein in his introduction to the Literatur im Herbst literary festival 2011. Taking place in Vienna from Friday 28 to Sunday 30 October, the three-day event brings together 23 authors from ten countries under the title "Via Donau: Literatur im Fluss" (Via Danube: Literature in Flow).
On the opening evening, acclaimed Hungarian literary critic and essayist László Földényi will give a speech in which he asks: "What colour is the Danube"; novelists Christoph Ransmayr and Ilija Trojanow will go on to exchange East-West perspectives on the river; and the novelist Michal Hvorecky will read from his novel "The American Danube".
More highlights over the next two days include the Hungarian novelist Zsuzsanna Gahse, author of Danube Dice; German-Romanian novelist and critic Richard Wagner on his relationship to his country of birth; Russian novelist Michail Schischkin, author of the prize-winning Venus Hair; György Dalos, Mircea Dinescu, Wolfgang Müller-Funk and others in discussion; and Romanian novelist Mircea Cartarescu, reading from his book The Body, the second part of his Orbitor Trilogy.
