International conference: Central European Forum
Bratislava, 5 and 6 November 2010
Eurozine is a media partner of the Central European Forum, an international conference open to the public taking place in Bratislava on 5 and 6 November 2010 at the Hviezdoslav Theatre, Laurinská 20.
Under the heading "Holding on to freedom", the two-day event features panels on "the end of politics" and "the role of Central Europe in a multipolar world".
Participants include: Zygmunt Bauman, Claus Offe, Adam Michnik, László Földényi, Martin Simecka, Jáchym Topol, Laurent Binet, László Rajk, Andrei Dynko, Karel Schwarzenberg, Mircea Cartarescu and Ivaylo Ditchev
Introducing the opening discussion, chaired by Croatian writer and Eurozine Advisory Board member Slavenka Drakulic, the organizers ask what the treatment of Roma and other minorities can tell us about the state of democracy and freedom in Europe.
And a session entitled "The square of dissent" commemorates the events of 25 August 1968, when eight Soviet citizens gathered on Moscow's Red Square to protest against the invasion of Czechoslovakia. The protest was dispersed within five minutes but the participants spent years in prisons, labour camps and psychiatric institutions. Two of them, Natalia Gorbanevskaya and Viktor Fainberg will be present in Bratislava to talk about their experiences.
