Vem, vad och var är dagens borgerlighet?


Efter tolv år av socialdemokratiskt styre i Sverige har vi fått en borgerlig regering. Innebär denna politiska förändring även en återkomst för borgerligheten som samhällsgrupp? Innan vi kan svara på den frågan måste vi veta vad det innebär att vara borgerlig idag. Vem är borgerlig? Vad är borgerlighet? Och vad är skillnaden mellan borgerlighet och medelklass? Dessa politiska förändringar och begreppsliga osäkerheter är utgångspunkten för Fronesis nr 24.

Ett sätt att förstå den nya borgerligheten är att utgå från produktionens förändring och vad som kan ses som "kapitalismens nya anda". Luc Boltanski och Ève Chiapello söker i managementlitteratur efter den "nya anda" som genomsyrar dagens kapitalism och borgerlighet. Det är en anda som har mer att göra med sextioåttornas alternativkultur och kritik av hierarkier än med den strama sekelskiftesborgerlighet som Max Weber syftade på när han skrev om kapitalismens anda.

Frågan om vilka som tillhör borgerligheten är inte bara osäker på den empiriska eller teoretiska nivån. Osäkerheten är också något som upplevs. Det borgerliga skiktet har ofta bekymrat sig över sitt förhållande till övriga samhällsgrupper, sin interna differentiering, sin moraliska karaktär och sin politiska framtid. Politiskt tar sig detta uttryck i att borgarna utvecklar särskiljande strategier för att kunna positionera sig gentemot andra grupper. I en historisk tillbakablick undersöker Orsi Husz hur den svenska borgerligheten försökt skapa gränser gentemot medelklassen i fråga om utbildningsprivilegier, förmögenhet och livsstil. Andra former av gränsdragningar diskuteras i Stephanie Lawlers analys av medelklassens känsla av äckel gentemot de lägre klasserna.

Borgarens förhållande till sin omvärld diskuteras även i Jakob Norberg essä om kaffets historia. Utifrån den tyske rättsfilosofen Carl Schmitts syn på borgerligheten visar Norberg hur borgarens egentliga liv utspelar sig i den privata sfären. Därmed betraktas den övriga världen som främmande och farligt territorium. Den borgerliga individen är ensidigt inriktad på sin egen välfärd och klarar inte av att knyta an till gemenskaper större än den egna familjen.

Slutligen granskar vi den värld som har lanserats av ekonomen Richard Florida. Kan hans "kreativa klass" ses som en ny borgerlighet? Den kreativa klassen upplöser gränsen mellan borgaren och bohemen ­ och skapar ett nytt produktivt subjekt som bär framtiden i sin hand. Jamie Peck diskuterar hur storstäders Floridainspirerade satsningar tydligt prioriterar en urban medelklass och förstärker stadens gentrifieringsprocesser. Camilla Elmhorn visar hur livsstilen för en ny urban elit i dagens Stockholm förutsätter framväxten av en tjänstemarknad med låga löner, där ofta migrerade kvinnor får tillgodose den nyväckta efterfrågan på pigor eller hushållsnära tjänster.
