Stimmt. Um Europäer zu werden, müßte man eine Menge europäischer Sprachen und Kulturen kennen – und das könnte man nur erreichen, wenn man ständig auf dem Kontinent unterwegs wäre.

Why are you all talking different languages? If Europe has to become a giant laboratory for rethinking humanity's future, then you plainly need to be able to understand each other.

But what if I don't want to?

Then just forget about the European Dream! Sustainable development, quality of life, a century of peace – who cares!

Yes, me too, but if the nurturing of community and speaking one's own dialect is on top of our priorities, then let's go on with it and stop dreaming about working together. After all, the Declaration of Bordeaux of 1978 proclaimed that "le droit de chaque Européen a sa région est un des éléments de son droit a la différence".

Ach was. Sie sagen das nur so, weil Sie Englisch gut können. Das neue Europa muß aus der Zukunft gestaltet werden, nicht aus der Vergangenheit: Europäisches Denken ist etwas Werdendes, nicht etwas Vollendetes. Silenzio, por favor! One issue is whether something can be said theoretically in any language, and a different issue is whether people are able to do that, which they are plainly not, in my humble opinion.
