Summary for Nova Istra 1-2/2006
Following Nova Istra's tradition of presenting very distinguished alongside upcoming literary names from contemporary Croatian literature, the latest issue presents new poetry and fiction by authors belonging to various generations.
The Third International Pula Essay Days were held last October as a two-part event: the first session included discussions about "Essay on essay" and the second one was entitled "How to read Europe?". Participants included authors and intellectuals from Italy, Hungary, Macedonia, Slovenia, and Croatia. Here, we present a series of their encouraging and thoughtfully engaging essays, which deeply penetrate literary and social contemporary life.
The section consisting of new translations presents texts from Polish (W. Gombrowicz), Austrian (E. Jandl), and American (S. Lea) literature.
An entire section deals with one of the most important and universal Croatian authors from the second half of the twentieth century – Antun Soljan. Included are essays and studies on certain segments of his opus.
The new studies are of contemporary Croatian poetry, children's literature, and short stories.
As for the philosophy section, we have chosen Derrida's deconstruction of authority and American theoretician Saul Newman's text on it.
One of the leading contemporary historians from Croatia, Miroslav Bertosa (a scientist whose professional texts are also often literary) contributes to Nova Istra for the first time in this issue. He offers literary essays and reviews the selected translations and Croatian literature.
Apart from the selection of Croatian titles, the reviews presented deal with works by foreign authors that have been translated into Croatian; namely, books by the following authors: Bruno Schulz, Lech Pazdzierski, Péter Zilahy, Béla Hamvas, Alain de Botton, David Lodge, Patrick Modiano, etc.
